Jennifer has always been a fan of impressionism but never considered herself creative or arty.
Whilst attending our Day Services drop-in over the past year, Jennifer began coming to the art room and discovered a hidden artistic talent! Starting with silk printing and mosaics, she then moved onto recreating some of her favourite Monet works, inspired by a recent visit to France where many of Monet’s works were painted.
Jennifer told us that she doesn’t have much patience when it comes to art, so oil pastels are the ideal medium for her. In fact, her first Monet reproduction was complete in just one day! Jennifer also gave us some sage advice: “Never say can’t.”

Hospices are best known for their nursing care. At St Gemma’s Hospice, whether it’s in our In-Patient Unit, Day Services, Out-Patient Clinic or in the community in patients’ homes, our nurses will do everything they can to listen and get their patients the care and support that they need. £25 could pay for 2 hours of nursing care. Every penny of this money provides equipment, specialist resources and nursing time to ensure every patient receives the best care possible.

Peter and Diane are our Spiritual Care team. Although we work hard to alleviate physical pain for our patients, it is important that we take the time to recognise their emotional needs as well. Knowing that you or someone you love is dying is extremely hard, and our Spiritual Care team help patients and families to explore the need for meaning, for self-worth, for faith support, or simply for a sensitive listener at this time. £50 is enough to enable Diane or Peter to spend an hour with a patient, and help them to find strength and comfort in their illness.

Our Young People’s Service works with 5-18 year olds who are bereaved and helps them to come to terms with their loss. They are supported either 1-on-1 or as a group, and are encouraged to be creative, often choosing to do crafts or write poems to help them express their feelings. Just £5 could pay for a young person to make a memory book about their relative who has died. This could make a big difference to how they deal with their grief.
