Have you got a neurological condition that is life limiting?
The Neuro Group is a new service for 2019. This group is specifically designed to address the needs of patients who have a neurological life-limiting illness, or whose presentation has many neurological elements.
Patients and carers attend for a 12-week programme of education and advice sessions. The aims for the sessions are to increase your confidence, improve your quality of life, help you develop strategies to improve your symptoms and put you back in control of your illness. Carers are encouraged to attend with their patients.
You will be contacted by one of our team with a date to start the programme. There are 12 sessions starting at 10am on Wednesdays. Each session lasts for two hours. If you are comfortable sharing your experiences with others, there will be an opportunity to do so at each session. Part of each session will cover a different topic to help you manage your condition.
Topics covered in the programme include:
- Goal setting
- Family care
- Living with fatigue
- Promoting independence and keeping active
- Good food
- Communication – understanding me
- Relationships
- Me time
- Advanced care planning
- Local connections and groups
At the beginning of the programme, each patient and carer will complete an assessment so we can establish what your particular needs are. After some session you may be invited to stay over lunchtime in order to have one-to-one sessions afterwards with therapists, our Family Support Team or doctors.
You are encouraged to participate within your own limits. Each session includes either relaxation or exercise and a chance to meet various professional members of the team. There may be sessions that you are not able to attend, but we encourage you to attend every session to receive the full support and information that this course can provide.
