Difficult Conversations at the End of Life

Course Content

This study day is designed to enhance confidence and skills when engaging in difficult conversations with patients/residents/clients and family/carers about end-of-life care. This is an opportunity to explore some key communication skills and consider how to manage different situations and potential reactions to these. (Assistive & Registration levels, NHSE 2025).

The study day includes:

  • Key challenges and barriers in end-of-life conversations
  • Effective communication skills and evidence-based models
  • Empathy and seeking to understand
  • How to use these skills in situations that are difficult and challenging
  • Simulated patient learning experience
  • Self care.

Eligibility Criteria

This study day is ideal for registered health and social care professionals who are band 4 and 5 (or equivalent), who want to enhance their knowledge and skills in palliative and end of life care.
