Overview of Advance Care Planning (Including understanding the ReSPECT process)

Course Content

Advance care planning (ACP) is a person-centred discussion between an individual and their care providers about their preferences and priorities for their future care, this session will help you feel confident and competent in initiating, supporting, sharing and recording these important conversations (Supportive, Assistive & Registration levels, NHSE 2025).

It is important to ensure that individuals’ wishes are respected when they can no longer speak for themselves.

The session includes:

  • What ACP is and why it matters
  • When and how to start ACP conversations
  • The underpinning legislation of the Mental Capacity Act
  • Different components of ACP, informal and legal: Advance Statements, Lasting Power of Attorney, Advance Decisions to Refuse Treatment
  • Documenting and sharing individuals’ preferences effectively
  • The ReSPECT process and how it links to ACP.
