Symptom Management Study Day: Holistic Needs Assessment

Course Content

A full-day study session covering Holistic Needs Assessment in palliative care; assessment and management of nausea, vomiting and constipation; delirium and terminal agitation (Assistive & Registration levels, NHSE 2025).

The study day includes:

  • The concept of ‘total pain’
  • Multidisciplinary team approach to meeting individuals holistic needs.
  • Strategy, guidance and tools supporting a Holistic Needs Assessment
  • Pathophysiology of nausea, vomiting and constipation.
  • Prevention and detection of delirium
  • Recognising terminal agitation as part of the dying process
  • Pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to managing these symptoms
  • Use of sedation at the end of life
  • Impact on carers ; Carers Support Needs Assessment Tool
  • Recognising ‘red flag’ indicators
  • Self care.

Eligibility Criteria

This study day is ideal for registered healthcare staff who are band 4 and 5 (or equivalent), who want to enhance their knowledge and skills palliative and end of life care.
