Jude’s story

St Gemma’s has helped me feel like me again.

When I was first referred to St Gemma’s, I didn’t know what to expect. I’d heard of the hospice but didn’t know where it was or how it could really help me. I suppose, like many people, I was a bit unsure. But reaching out to St Gemma’s is the best thing I could have done.

I started coming to the day services and joined some of the outpatient groups. I could choose what I wanted to take part in and began with gym and Zumba.

Now that I’m more poorly, I can’t come in as often. But I know I can always pick up the phone. The community team visits me at home, and they always get back to me when I call. That means everything. When you have terminal cancer, you have down days – but knowing there’s someone to talk to who understands makes all the difference.

There are so many little moments of care that have stuck with me. One that meant the world was when I was renewing my vows after 25 years of marriage. I wasn’t well at the time, but Helen, one of the therapists, offered to do my nails as part of my care. It might sound small, but I can’t go to a normal salon – my medication has made my nails brittle, and it just wouldn’t be safe due to the products they use.

Helen knew exactly what to do. She made me feel comfortable, pampered, and more like myself again. I trusted her completely. It was just a really special moment at a time when I needed it most.

People don’t always realise how much these small things matter. It’s not just about medical care – it’s about being treated like a person, not a patient. St Gemma’s understands that. They give you the space to talk, to be listened to, and to feel like you’re not alone.

It’s up to me what I want to do – I can sit here and fret, or I can go to St Gemma’s and speak to people who understand. They understand what I am going through and they are always there for me. It’s nice to among others who are going through the same thing as me. If you’re thinking about supporting the hospice – please do. Your kindness helps people like me find comfort, connection, and dignity when it matters most.
