Compassionate, thoughtful care delivered with real attention to the needs of each person and their family. That human connection is at the heart of everything St Gemma’s does.
As I come to the end of my time as Chair at St Gemma’s Hospice, I’ve been reflecting on what a privilege it’s been to be part of such a special organisation. This role has meant a great deal to me, professionally and personally, and I feel incredibly grateful for the experience.
What has stood out most over the years are the stories I’ve heard from our staff: stories of compassionate, thoughtful care delivered with real attention to the needs of each person and their family. That human connection is at the heart of everything St Gemma’s does.

There’s a true sense of teamwork here, and I’ve often been struck by the uplifting energy across the organisation. Whether that’s colleagues supporting one another, or the buzz around events and fundraising, it’s a place filled with purpose and warmth.
I’ve been fortunate to work alongside a group of talented and deeply caring Trustees, as well as the Sisters of the Cross and Passion, who have all brought so much insight, support, and wisdom. I’ve learnt a great deal from them.
The Executive and senior leadership teams are constantly looking for ways to improve the care St Gemma’s provides, always with spirit, warmth, and determination. Each of them brings their own strengths to the table, and it’s been inspiring to witness their commitment in action.
I’ve genuinely enjoyed my time in this role. The events St Gemma’s organises, especially the Ball, have been highlights for me. I’ve also really appreciated the fun, friendly welcome from the staff in the kitchen, dining areas, and reception. Their warmth is part of what makes the Hospice feel so special.
On a personal note, I was proud to take on a fundraising challenge last year, completing the half marathon in Achill. I’m not sure I’d have stuck with the training if it weren’t for the cause, but I’m so glad I did!

As I look ahead, I have no doubt that St Gemma’s will continue to thrive. The focus must always remain on delivering the best possible patient care, listening carefully to the voices of families and staff, and making wellbeing a priority.
I’ll continue to support the Hospice however I can, and I’ll carry this chapter with me always. My time at St Gemma’s has helped me grow as a person; I leave more compassionate, more understanding, and deeply thankful for the experience.
Our sincerest thanks to Phil for her contribution to ensuring St Gemma’s thrives and is run effectively, safely, and legally. All of our trustees, including the Chair, are volunteers who generously give their time and extensive skills to support the Hospice. We look forward to introducing our new Chair of Trustees shortly.
