Young People’s Cabin

A dedicated space

Our purpose-built, child-friendly space in the Hospice gardens has a big area for group activities and play therapy like messy art and sand play, a kitchen for cooking sessions, and racks to display the children’s paintings.

The space is also used for ‘memory days’ when the children make something that reminds them of their loved one who died and talk about their grief and has a smaller, quiet room for counselling.

Designed with bereaved children and young people in mind

The Young People’s Cabin is located in the Hospice’s gardens and opened in summer 2023. The sustainable building was designed by architects ArkleBoyce with input from children supported by St Gemma’s.

It is now a dedicated space for the hundreds of youngsters supported by St Gemma’s bereavement team each year.

A space for…

Group Activities

The Cabin provides a safe space for group activities such as ‘memory days’, play therapy like messy art and sand play, and a kitchen for cooking sessions.

Quiet reflection

The smaller room for counselling sessions provides an important quiet space for children to talk about their feelings.

Tailored support

Every young person is different and we believe this purpose-built space provides an environment where children of all ages can feel relaxed and supported.

St Gemma’s has been a lifeline for us as a family. The children’s bereavement team were exceptional, providing individual and group activities, trips away and allowing the boys to meet and spend time with others going through similar situations and to see that they weren’t the only ones and they would be ok.

Spencer and Lewis spent time with the architects and gave their ideas for how The Cabin should look. To have this really tailored support has been fantastic and I’m so grateful to the whole team.
