Hannah’s Story
With support from the St Gemma’s community team, Hannah’s father, Paul Appleton, was able to spend his final days where he wanted to – at home, surrounded by his loved ones. Hannah shares her story:
“My dad had suffered with his health the past 20 years with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, heart attacks, diabetes etc. Two years ago we had the news that he was terminal with heart failure and lung cancer, the worst news to hear!
After all my dad has been through he chose he didn’t want treatment this time round for the cancer and we respected that. My dad was given six months to live two years ago but he fought everyday and didn’t dwell on it, he was living everyday like it was his last. My dad went past 6 months and was still here a year and half later!
My dad had explained that he wanted to be cared for at home by his family (me and my mum) when the final days come, St Gemma’s let this happen! They came out everyday with the district nurses and phoned to check if me and my mum were coping and if we needed help etc. With me working in dementia/nursing end of life, I knew what was to come.
I honestly cannot thank them enough, especially Becky Weeks; your dedication is amazing and honestly, if it wasn’t for you, my dad wouldn’t have got his wish to be at home surrounded by his family, so honestly thank you so much!
My dad was the best dad, husband, grandad, son, brother and uncle, and we will miss him terribly.
My dad passed away on 23rd January 2021 surrounded by family. Thank you so much to St Gemma’s for your help, support and dedication and also for the aftercare for me and my mum.”
