Clare’s story
“Hi, I’m Clare and I’m a Sister on the Dales Ward at St Gemma’s Hospice. I want to share my nurse career journey so far to inspire others who may be thinking about a move into nursing.
In fact, I didn’t actually start out in nursing at all. I was part-way through a business degree and took a job as a home carer during my sandwich year and fell in love with it. Although I finished my business degree, I knew from then that I wanted to go into nursing. I went straight into an integrated MA in nursing at York University, which helped me gain so much experience in different areas. After doing various 3 month placements, banking as a Healthcare Assistant and working in district nursing in Hull, I chose to go down the path of becoming a community nurse.
I joined St Gemma’s as a sister around 2.5 years ago and honestly love working here. I’ve been given a lot of support to progress my career and have had the opportunity to work on different projects, including taking the lead on bringing in single nurse administration. I’ve now been given the opportunity to manage a brand new culture project, which I’m really excited about.
At St Gemma’s everyone is so inspirational. Whether you speak to the nurses, the senior team, the bistro staff or the housekeepers, you’re always met with such kindness and positivity. I love working with patients and their families to make sure we give the best possible care. I also really enjoy working with my team to make sure that everyone has the best shift together.
Although I’m not originally from Leeds, I love how well thought of St Gemma’s is in the local community and I feel really proud to work for this amazing organisation.”
