Denise’s story
“I’m Denise and I’m a Senior Ward Sister at St Gemma’s. I’ve always known I wanted to be a nurse, so after doing a nursing degree I went straight into developing a new service for the young people’s disability team in 1993. Since then my career has been a real journey and a mix of roles; from working in respiratory medicine, haematology and then oncology. My first ward sister’s post was within oncology in 2000 where I worked for over 10 years as a junior sister and then as a night nurse practitioner. I then went on to become a palliative care nurse specialist within Leeds teaching hospital trust where I worked for 11 years. During this time I became a non-medical prescriber.
3 years ago I came to St Gemma’s to join our nurse-led team. I’d actually met my future colleague, Catherine, at a conference on non-medical prescribing and she spoke about St Gemma’s so passionately that I knew it was the place for me. I came as a nurse practitioner and then had the opportunity to become a ward manager. I really love working with staff and supporting them, especially through challenging times. It is important to me that they feel looked after because they give so much of themselves to patients and relatives every day.
There is so much job satisfaction and stimulation within my role. Staff go the extra mile to make a patient feel cared for and improve their quality of life. It can often be the little things that make a big difference and that’s what St Gemma’s is known for.
If you’re looking for stimulating role and can go above and beyond to provide individualised specialist care, St Gemma’s is the place for you.”
