Hayley’s story
This is Hayley’s story. After reading about the new pavilion for bereaved children, Hayley reached out about fundraising for St Gemma’s.
“I will be running London Marathon after being allocated a last-minute place. As such, I’m classed as a ‘free’ athlete because I’m not running in a charity place. I wasn’t planning on raising any money, often the pressure and the time needed is overwhelming when on a busy life schedule. However, when I read about the bereavement support and pavilion being built, I feel like I need to use the opportunity of running the marathon to help raise some money.
“My friend died last week, aged only 40. It’s devastating. Worse, I think, is that she has 7-year-old twins. I’m a primary teacher and have taught so many bereaved children who’ve lost close family and support is so needed and so important; this pavilion will be incredible and children in Leeds will be so lucky to have access to something like that when times are unimaginable. My auntie worked for St Gemma’s for years and I know how good the care was then.
“My grandpa died there nearly 14 years ago, and I know the care he received was outstanding. It’s so encouraging to see how the support is continuing where it’s needed, not just to patients but to families too. I can’t promise how much can be raised so close to the event but I hope what can be raised will help in some way.”
We’re so incredibly grateful for your support Hayley and wish you the very best of luck with the London Marathon.
