We hope you have enjoyed hearing about some of the inspirational women who have been instrumental in the history of St Gemma's Hospice. We are lucky to have had, and still have, so many amazing women leading, shaping and providing care across Leeds.
Our Chief Executive, Kerry Jackson, shared these words: “On International Women’s Day it is wonderful to learn about some of the women behind the last 40 years of St Gemma’s Hospice. They, along with countless other staff, volunteers and supporters, have enabled the Hospice to care for tens of thousands of people at the end of life. We are so proud of all of the people who make our extra special care possible.”

Elizabeth Prout founded the Sisters of the Cross and Passion in 1850 - despite suffering from TB and often working 18 hours a day, running day and night schools - after she saw the poverty and struggles of the people in Manchester where she lived.
Her belief in education is the reason the Hospice’s education centre (now renamed the Academic Unit of Palliative Care) was originally named after her. Elizabeth remains an inspiration today as education is an important part of St Gemma’s, to ensure knowledge and expertise of end of life care is circulated to other healthcare staff including GPs, trainees and nurses around Leeds. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2018 ... The Sisters of the Cross and Passion are an amazing group of women whose strong faith and innovative spirit led them to found a Hospice in 1978, when few ordinary folk had even heard of the word. The Sisters opened the Hospice to meet the needs of the people of Leeds. They had incredible belief in the generosity of the community, with Sister Olivia saying ‘give the service as if you already had the money to pay for it’.
Along with many local volunteers, they helped nurse patients and care for their families from the day it opened on 12th April 1978. #IWD2018 #InternationalWomensDay ... See MoreSee Less
Today is #InternationalWomensDay and we will be reflecting on the integral role women have played in the history of St Gemma’s Hospice. As it is our 40th Anniversary year, we’d like to introduce just some of the incredible women who have made 40 years of care possible - starting with Saint Gemma Galgani.
Chosen as the patron of St Gemma’s because of her remarkable life and caring nature, by 25 she had nursed both of her parents through terminal illness. The Hospice was first dedicated on March 12th 1978, specially chosen because it would have been Saint Gemma’s 100th birthday. #IWD2018 ... See MoreSee Less
