Marilyn Stowe makes significant contribution to support bereaved children
Our work here at St Gemma’s Hospice would not be possible without the support of our generous community. Each and every day we are privileged to have support from local people, businesses, schools, community groups and more. We were only able to commence work on The Cabin, our new building to support children facing bereavement, after receiving a substantial donation from our Patron Marilyn Stowe.
Marilyn has her own very special motivation to support this project; as she shared with us recently:
“I was honoured and proud to be appointed the first Jewish Patron of St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds. I didn’t regard it as a titular role. I was prepared to help those in greatest need particularly in loving and eternal memory of my best friend and beloved grandmother Cissie Wilkin Morris. I remember she always had a glass of Lucozade to hand as I stopped off en route to Leeds Uni to take my exams.
My grandmother lost a mother she never knew a few days after her birth. I have always thought about the impact that a significant bereavement has on anyone, particularly a child. I wanted to help the many children of Leeds suffering the terrible loss of their parent, so when I heard about St Gemma’s plans to build The Cabin, I had no hesitation in making a major contribution to allow the building work to go ahead. I’m proud to have played such a pivotal role in supporting this wonderful new project that will help so many children across Leeds. It’s an incredible dedicated space, based at the Hospice, for the team to support young people going through bereavement.”
The St Gemma’s team is hugely grateful to Marilyn and to the other individuals and organisations who generously supported The Cabin.
