“Experiencing the loss of my Dad at a young age to a brain tumour was one of the core reasons for me wanting to become a nurse. Throughout the duration of my Dad’s illness St Gemma’s supported us as a family. On several occasions he was admitted to the Hospice for symptom management and finally for end of life care. During this time, the whole family developed really trusting relationships with the nursing team and St Gemma’s as a whole.
This first-hand experience of the care and support that St Gemma’s provides fuelled my motivation to want to help others living through similar experiences. This cemented my career journey to become a nurse at the Hospice.
I have received fantastic support in terms of my academic development. Initially St Gemma’s helped me to obtain my GCSEs, by allowing me to take set evenings off work to attend night college. After that I could apply for the nursing degree programme with the Open University. Having the support of St Gemma’s in this way gave me the opportunity to progress in my career journey without any financial burden, and provided me with the academic qualifications I needed. I will always be thankful for the opportunity to continue to earn whilst working towards achieving my nursing degree and I have proudly been part of St Gemma’s for the last 15 years.”
