Hi, I’m Jane and I started as a Registered Nurse at St Gemma’s in December 2021. I actually did a placement at the Hospice at the end of my nursing degree 14 years ago and loved it then but there wasn’t a position for me at the time.
After qualifying, I became a nurse in Elective Orthopaedics in Chapel Allerton, where I stayed for 13 years. I enjoyed the role a lot but it was only when I was redeployed to run the respiratory ward during the pandemic to look after Covid-19 patients, that I realised I could put my hand to anything and should change paths. I’d stayed in my comfort zone for a long time and it was time to break out of it. I did a lot of palliative care during the pandemic, which gave me the confidence boost I needed to apply for a role in palliative care.
I found out that St Gemma’s were recruiting Registered Nurses last summer and applied. Since starting, I’ve had an amazing induction, loads of extra training and feel so supported in my role. Everyone at the Hospice is so welcoming and I feel like I can knock on anyone’s door for a chat or to ask a question.
The main benefit of working here, for me, is the flexibility. I’ve been able organise my shifts around my childcare rather than the other way round. I now have a shift pattern of 3 long days one week and 3 nights the next and it suits me perfectly.
I also have the time to give good care. Working on a 1 nurse to 5 patient ratio means I can spend more time with my patients and really make a difference. It’s still a busy nursing role but a very different kind of busy to working in a hospital environment.
It’s a common misconception that hospices are sad and gloomy places to work but I find St Gemma’s the opposite. It’s a positive place to work and is also a lovely and calming environment for patients and families. They get a lot from the beautiful gardens and tranquil atmosphere. Also, many patients come and are admitted for care at the Hospice, so they can manage symptoms before returning home. I’m so glad I took the step to move to palliative care nursing and I would wholeheartedly recommend a move to St Gemma’s to anyone thinking about a career change.
