Gillian’s Poem
In these testing times, healthcare staff are facing the challenge of a lifetime. At St Gemma’s, we are so proud of the ways our team are stepping up to the challenge, supporting each other, and still delivering outstanding care for patients and their families.
Heather McClelland, St Gemma’s Chief Nurse said: “The pandemic has presented nurses and healthcare staff around the world with a huge challenge and brought into sharp focus their essential work. We value the safe, effective and compassionate care our team give to thousands of local people each year.’
St Gemma’s Healthcare Assistant Gillian Thornton wrote this beautiful poem reflecting on what care means to her:
I am on my way to work again
And my mind is full of lists
Get some shopping, clean the house
And wash and dry some bits
Are the kids okay today
Are my loved ones safe and well?
Do I need to call the vet today?
My pet is looking so unwell
Then I reach my place of work
And all thoughts that have gone before
Are no longer in my mind
As I leave them at the door
I then put on my uniform
And I add a smile for you to see
Because now I am working
And it is no longer about me
I devote to you my whole time
My attention, my professionalism, my skill
I am here for you and your family
Through this tough time of you being ill
I will listen to you, I will answer you
I will hold you until your sobs subside
I will guide your family through this
And I will do this with pride
You are my only priority
You are the centre of my day
And I want to make sure you are comfortable
And pain free in every way
I want to know your worries
I want to know what troubles your mind
If I can ease your burden
There are ways that I will find
And if you just want me to hold you
While your life comes to an end
Then that is what I will do for you
My patient and my friend.
